The workplace is where most of us spend large parts of the day, and a poor sound environment in the workplace is a major burden. Good acoustics are therefore crucial for better working conditions, especially in open spaces, meeting rooms and canteens.

Challenges

Is it difficult to concentrate in an office environment surrounded by colleagues?

Common to these areas is that the reverberation should be short. Ventilation and fixed technical installations must be silent and inaudible.

"If I can hear you, I can understand you, I don't necessarily need to see you. If I can see you but not hear you, it is useless to try to understand you."

For many of the areas we spend time in every day, such noise should not exceed 30 dB. In many cases, the noise should be lower than 30 dB. The permitted values for reverberation and noise in these areas are determined by NS8175.

Meeting and video conferencing rooms

In order to have good and effective meetings, the meeting room must be properly organised. Hard surfaces and poor soundproofing materials will cause significant reverberation, making it difficult to have good meetings and conversations. If there is no soundproofing, the sound will be reflected around the room, which is perceived by a microphone, resulting in a lot of noise during a video conference.

The NS8175-2019 standard sets out requirements for reverberation time in video conference rooms. These rooms are regulated by law because they are part of our working life and workplaces.

There is no standard for how to achieve the right acoustic conditions. We have therefore developed, based on considerable experience, good methods for solving various problems related to conference rooms. Using remote inspection or sound measurements, we design solutions that ensure good speech clarity and speech perception in the room.

This is how much you need

In meeting rooms, many people often talk at the same time, so it is important to have good sound absorption. Meeting rooms often have hard, parallel walls. This causes sound to "bounce" between the walls, known as "flutter echo". This is prevented by installing absorbers at head height. Absorbers in ceilings are also necessary.

In open-plan offices and offices, a sufficient amount of absorption is needed to achieve good working conditions. Areas such as ceilings and walls are covered with the necessary amount of absorption, and absorption is also important between workstations. By installing acoustic partitions and desk screens, directional sound is absorbed while providing visual screening. In open-plan offices, we have also found that it is very effective to install absorbers that hang from the ceiling in wire, i.e. baffles.

After carrying out a large number of measurements, calculations and installations, we have learnt that most living spaces need a coverage level of approx. 65% in relation to floor area to be good and usable rooms for most applications. If there is extra height under the ceiling, greater coverage is often required.

A combination of sound-absorbing ceilings, sound-absorbing absorbers on the walls, carpets and special sound-absorbing furniture and pictures/decorations can be realised "everywhere" and to such an extent that the conditions are very good for the users.

The formula is as follows
The room's m² / 100 x experience-based coverage ratio of 65% = X m²

Example
The room is 75 metres² / 100 x 65% = approx. 48.75 m² absorbers are needed in the room.

This is, of course, a rough and experience-based approach. To be more precise, you need to carry out acoustic measurements in the area and base exact calculations on that.

Yggdrasil™ perforated wood panel

The solution is designed specifically for direct wall mounting. But can also be installed in ceilings. With high sound absorption and effective sound attenuation, sound class B, it is therefore suitable for most rooms and areas where there is a lot of reverberation and noise. The solution is also very solid and resists harsh treatment and is often used in, for example, sports halls. The board is available with a traditional Oak surface. Special order with Birch or Ash and other colours.

There are three components in the solution;Eira^TM40mm black absorber (sound class A) with high density is mounted inside with adhesive/fixing agent to the absorber. The perforated MDF board is mounted on the outside of the absorber. Screws and mouldings are not included.

All our calculations and measurements are based on the standard NS8175:2019 - Sound in buildings and NS8178:2014 (music and rehearsal rooms). Please note that the standard from 2012 is still valid according to the building regulations, TEK 17. Sound attenuation products recommended will be in accordance with CE 13964:2014 or equivalent.
